New Media in school career guidance –

Opportunities, challenges and good practice

Workshop leader

Wolfgang Bliem, project manager at the Ibw Austria – Research & Development in VET in Vienna.

His work focuses on the development of tools and materials for vocational and educational information as well as qualification research.

Goal of the workshop

The workshop focuses on the use of new media in educational and vocational guidance and counselling at school, and the skills required for this.

Description of the workshop

New, digital applications and a constantly growing range of information are changing the requirements placed on career guidance services and guidance counsellors.

The possibilities for self-guidance by those seeking information and advice often encounter a lack of media competence.

This may lead to an overburdening of all parties involved.

This applies in particular to information, counselling and orientation processes in the school context.

The new media competences on the part of the young people as well as on the part of the teachers and guidance practitioners are to be discussed.

Alternating phases of impulse lectures and group discussions should enable the participants to bring in their views and experiences into the workshop, but also concrete examples from their practical daily work.

With the help of such practical examples, the different possible fields of application of new media will be illustrated and opportunities, challenges, but also limitations of tools, methods and applications will be discussed.

In particular, the question arises as to which competencies career counsellors, other guidance practitioners and teachers need today in order to be able to make efficient use of the many new opportunities themselves and at the same time to promote those seeking advice in their ability to self-guidance and their media competence?

How is the role of consultants and teachers developing in this area of tension?

In this context, the learning outcomes and quality indicators from the Erasmus+ project QYCGuidance (Quality in Youth Career Guidance and nowadays media literacy) will also be briefly presented during the workshop.
